The First Break

Like my new karate chopping arm?!
I'm getting used to this, only 3 weeks and 2 more days until it's off!

3 days into her first week of Kindergarten Ryleigh broke her wrist on the playground at school. That's not the worst part.....she walked around for 2 days with a broken wrist before we knew it was broken, and that's not the worst part.......her horrible mom, me, continued to tell her to "stop whining" about it on Wednesday night as Josh and I were getting ready to leave for the Twins game. Yes, I feel HORRIBLE and know I need to let go of the guilt but look at the poor baby! Okay, just one thing in my defense. I didn't get a call from school so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Had an adult called me and told me what had happened I think I would have done something right away. I'm not putting blame on anyone, it's no one's fault, I'm just trying to justify the fact that I dropped the ball. I've had several people ask me why it's so high up her arm if it's just her wrist that's broken, here's the answer: if the cast was below the elbow, she would be able to twist and move her wrist. Her elbow was a little bit swollen too. It wasn't broken but she did hurt it a little bit. The bone in the elbow is shaped like a donut and in the middle is fat. She hit her elbow so hard that the fat came out and swelled around her elbow.
She is adjusting well to it. She was a little bit embarrassed on Monday when she walked into class but has been fine ever since. She's also met a bunch of new kids at school with her crazy yellow cast. She's so resilient as most kids are I suppose. What an eventful first week of Kindergarten. One we will always remember!

That's what Josh calls me. A hippy. He says my "hippy" ways drive him crazy but I think he secretly likes it. I wouldn't call myself this name, but I think 'goinggreenmama' would be more appropriate. Yes, I am obsessed with recycling and think that those who don't do it are completely lazy. And, yes, I try not to let my car run excessively, and yes, I like to clean my house with enviornmentally friendly cleaners but I wouldn't call myself a "hippy". Slowly though, I think Josh is right, our little man Carter now wears cloth diapers (for most of the time, especially when we are at home). Here are the reasons why.

Carter has horribly sensitive skin, I can't use any type of detergent that has any fragrence, color, etc. I have to use super gentle soap that costs a pretty penny, and he has ezema. Poor guy is also allergic to eggs and bug bites! Now I will tell you that I got a blood screen done to check for allergies and it came back that he had none but he had a very clear allergic reaction after eating a small piece of a hard boiled egg (I'm still trying to figure out if he can or cannot eat things with eggs in them). When he gets a bug (mosquito) bite, it swells up so big and nasty that it doesn't go away for months, yes, months.

Back to my cloth diaper reasonings....Carter had a horrible rash for so long and finally at his 15 month check up the doctor let me know that he has to wear chlorine free, all natural diapers, which are expensive! But let's be real here, do I really want chorine on my precious baby's booty anyway? No thanks. So cloth it is! Is it a pain? Yes. Is it more time consuming? Yes. Is it gross and messy at times? Yes. Is it worth it? YES!
I guess I sort of enjoy my hippy ways...

Kindergarten.....cut short

As written by Ryleigh....

Here I am on my first morning of Kindergarten. Even though it's about two hours earlier than I normally wake up, I'm really excited!
My mom made me some yummy scrambled eggs and a bagel!
Then she made me and my brother take pictures outside. He didn't want to take pictures, he just wanted to run down the yard, then the sidewalk, and into the street like he does every time we walk out the front door! See him here, he's already planning his getaway.
Here I am walking in with my family. I a little bit nervous, this is a big school, with BIG kids!

Where's my locker? And why is the girl who was next to me at meet the teacher night not next to me anymore? This is TOTALLY throwing my day off. I need structure and routine!
Stay tuned for the next post to find out how the middle of my week went......

Ryleigh's first concert

Saturday we took Ryleigh to see Brad Paisley. She LOVED it and danced all night long. She looked adorable too, but the adults had more fun wearing her pink cowgirl hat with tiera in front than she did.

5 year old logic

This is a recent conversation at the dinner table:

Ryleigh: Mom, are beans a vegetable?

Mom: What do you think they are?

Ryleigh: (Thinking).....OOOOHHHHH! They're a fruit, "Beans, beans, the magical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot, the more you toot, the better you feel, so eat your beans at every meal."

Love this girl, she's so smart.

Ryleigh and the Giant Lolipop

A friend of ours wanted to take a few pictures to get started in the photography business so of course Ryleigh offered up herself. She was especially excited about getting to keep the giant twirly lolipop! She has what I call her "fake smile" on for most of these pics but I still love them. She's such a big girl and I think she really enjoyed the fact that all of the attention was on her cause her little bro wasn't there!
